A
native of Israel, Tova Kindred grew up exercising naturally.
"We walked everywhere, climbed hills, bicycled, and danced,"
she recalls. And she and her family consumed a healthy diet
based on fresh vegetables and fruits. While Tova was still
a teen, the Family moved to New York, where she began her
beauty career. With a natural talent for styling hair, she
began studying and working in a small salon. She soon became
known for her innovative work and today, her name is synonymous
with the beauty business. Why the lifelong interest in fitness?
"I stayed in shape during those years in New York by
dancing," she says, laughing at the memory. "We
worked hard, hard all day and danced all night!!" After
moving to Houston in 1982, she began work at Lord and Taylor
beauty salon, where she quickly established a faithful following.
In 1986, she opened her first salon on Marilee and in 1990,
moved her posh, full-service salon, to Tovas Hair Studio.
Despite the demands of running a business, she makes time
to exercise daily. "I wake up every morning and look
forward to the adventures of that new day," she says
expressing her enthusiastic approach to life. From 5:30
to 8 a.m., she stretches, swims laps, jogs, and works out
with free weights. "Exercise helps provide me the energy
for the long time I spend on my feet," she says. She
eats a disciplined low fat diet, with emphasis on fresh
fruit and vegetables. "I strive for a balanced intake
of about 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day, "she notes.
When there's time, she loves to cook and especially enjoys
inventing new, healthy recipes that feature fish (her favorite)
or beans. Favorite entrees at restaurants, are lobster at
The Palm, fish at Anthony's and grilled chicken salad at
Post Oak Grill. Her husband, Ace Kindred is also her business
partner. They met almost 12 years ago and both claim it
was "love at first sight." They enjoy travel,
including regular visits to Tova's family in New York and
Ace's children and grandchildren in California. The pair
like supporting fundraising events, including those for
The March of Dimes, The American Heart Association, and
"any group that helps children," she adds. Favorite
shopping sites are Versus and Tootsie's, but she also collects
unusual separates and accessories on her travels. Fortunately
for Tova, staying in shape allows her to wear the body-conscious
styles she prefers. "I feel better today than when
I was 20," she says. "Age is only a number, and
when you feel good about yourself, you look good."
